Because the money that you make at your job is not keeping up with the amount of money it takes to produce the stuff that you buy. 

Basically, you go to work and try your best, but the products that you purchase are making tons of profit off of you, because they can, they also need your money to keep producing more. The more that you consume, the more that major corporations can profit off of you.
