Kangaroo Escapes and Causes a Stir in Hernando County
A missing kangaroo has recently created quite the buzz in Hernando County, Florida. On November 13, the 4-month-old kangaroo was spotted hopping past J.D. Floyd Elementary School while wearing a diaper and a blue harness. This unusual event caught the attention of local law enforcement and residents.
Details of the Kangaroo’s Escape
This sighting began when the kangaroo was reported “east bound” outside the elementary school during school hours. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office quickly sprang into action, indicating they were on the lookout for the pet Kangaroo.
Deputies were able to locate the kangaroo in less than an hour after reports came in. The chase lasted approximately 45 minutes before the deputies successfully caught the pet kangaroo. Thankfully, the kangaroo was unharmed and returned to its owner, who remained unnamed.
This incident wasn’t the first of its kind in Florida. Earlier this month, a kangaroo escaped in Volusia County following an encounter with a bear. The owner was ultimately cited for several violations, serving as a reminder of the responsibilities associated with exotic pet ownership.
Owning exotic pets like kangaroos comes with a set of responsibilities, including adhering to local regulations and ensuring proper care. Owners need maintain suitable enclosures and should notify authorities promptly in case of an escape.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office engaged with the community through their social media, generating a considerable amount of interaction related to the incident. Local resident had a lot to say and post about the pet Kangaroo, according to the Miami Herald .
One resident said, “I’m glad they specified the blue harness and diaper to differentiate from all the other kangaroos you see every day,” Tim Dykes wrote.
Another wrote, “Did y’all search its pouch for drugs and weapons?” James Rodriguez asked.
