Washington DC – Elon Musk and his team from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have been granted access to the extensive federal payment system that manages trillions of dollars in government spending, as reported by various sources to ABC News.

This payment system, which effectively serves as the federal government’s checkbook, operates under tight control by career officials. Access to its sensitive information is severely restricted.

Last week, administrative leave was imposed on David Lebryk, who was in charge of the Treasury Department, after he opposed granting access to the database for Musk and his efficiency team from the government.

Ron Wyden, the senior Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, expressed alarm in a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding potential misuse of these payment systems. He highlighted concerns that individuals connected to Musk may have aimed to illegally withhold funds from various programs.

Following the report, Wyden emphasized the need for immediate clarification, warning that any political interference in Treasury payments could inflict significant harm to the economy.

Wyden’s correspondence made clear that the payment systems, which distribute trillions of dollars annually for programs like Social Security and Medicare, must remain safeguarded from political influence. He stated that such systems are crucial to maintaining national financial stability.

He pointed out past instances where Musk was denied a high-level security clearance due to concerns about cybersecurity and the potential leakage of sensitive data, especially in light of China’s imposed threats.

In his letter, Wyden asked whether Musk’s associates had indeed sought access to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s payment systems, requesting identification of these individuals and a comprehensive list of all affiliated officials granted such access (www.finance.senate.gov)

He additionally demanded details regarding the cybersecurity measures to be employed to protect these critical payment systems from foreign interference.

Musk recently commented on a post from his social media platform, stating that Treasury payment approval officers were instructed to process payments automatically, even to fraudulent or terrorist groups—a claim that illustrates the perceived vulnerabilities within the system.

Musk’s recent statement on X regarding the U.S Treasury Department:

“The @DOGE team discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. They literally never denied a payment in their entire career. Not even once.”
