How Did Zelensky Respond to Trump’s Claims About Dictatorship and Misleading the U.S. on Ukraine’s War?

President Zelensky

On Wednesday, Trump criticized Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, claiming he misled the United States into spending vast sums on a “losing war.” Trump suggested that Ukraine would face difficulties negotiating peace without American support.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump denounced U.S. financial aid to Ukraine, arguing that European nations had contributed significantly less while America received “nothing in return.” He further alleged that Zelensky was dodging elections and suggested that corruption ran rampant in Ukraine.

Trump declared that Zelensky, a somewhat successful comedian, had persuaded the U.S. to invest $350 billion in a conflict that should never have begun, asserting that Zelensky would be unable to resolve the situation without U.S. intervention and his own presence in office.

A report from the U.S. State Department in January revealed that Ukraine had received approximately $65.9 billion in military assistance from the U.S. since Russia’s invasion escalated.

In response to Trump’s attacks, Zelensky stated he would meet with U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg on Thursday, expressing hopes for productive collaboration with America.

Late Wednesday, after Trump’s remarks labeling Zelensky a “dictator,” Zelensky communicated with Ukrainians via his evening video address. He emphasized that Trump seemed trapped in a “disinformation space” orchestrated by Russia.

On Tuesday, Trump appeared to assign blame to Ukraine for the ongoing conflict and claimed Zelensky’s approval rating might be as low as 4%. This statement came after discussions between U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia that did not involve Ukraine.

Zelensky suggested that Ukraine use 20 Patriot missile systems, along with U.S. licenses to manufacture the missiles domestically, in exchange for the absence of American troops in Ukraine. He noted that the nation’s air defenses were running low on Patriot missiles. He called for permission to produce them independently.

At a press conference, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s pursuit of security guarantees. He also emphasized its aim to conclude the war by the end of the year. However, he acknowledged that the U.S. does not view NATO membership as a suitable security assurance for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised recent high-level discussions between U.S. and Russian officials as a “first step” toward repairing relations, marking the first direct talks since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Delegates from both sides maintained a positive demeanor, though they downplayed expectations for immediate progress in peace negotiations regarding Ukraine.

Putin indicated that resolving significant issues, including the Ukrainian situation, hinges on enhancing trust between the two nations. He expressed satisfaction with the talks, labeling them as a promising start for collaborative efforts in various areas of mutual concern.

Russia aims to completely restore diplomatic relations with Washington, according to reports. This includes a wish to reclaim access to Russian diplomatic properties in the U.S. These properties are located in Maryland and New York. The Obama administration seized them in late 2016 due to alleged intelligence operations.

Furthermore, the Kremlin seeks to reinitiate discussions regarding arms control and nuclear nonproliferation while asking for partial sanctions relief that includes lifting restrictions on certain Russian officials and unfreezing assets. The U.S. has blocked about $6 billion in Russian foreign currency reserves since the invasion began.

Reports suggest that the Kremlin is banking on the personal rapport between Trump and Putin to benefit its interests.

In May 2024, Putin claimed that Zelensky’s presidential term had expired and asserted the need for elections in Ukraine, a narrative that has been echoed to undermine Zelensky’s legitimacy. Elected in April 2019 with a decisive 73% of the vote, Zelensky is about to face an election in 2024, but elections are prohibited under martial law according to Ukraine’s constitution.
