The US Government Charges Afghan National in Alleged Iranian Trump Assassination Plot

On Friday, the Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against Farhad Shakeri, a 51-year-old Afghan national. He is accused of being involved in an Iranian plot to assassinate Donald Trump before he became president. The government claims that Shakeri was tasked with creating a plan for this alarming mission.

“The Department of Justice on Friday unsealed an indictment against Farhad Shakeri, 51, alleging he was tasked with “providing a plan” to kill Trump.” According to BBC.

Also BBC stated that, “The Justice Department has charged an asset of the Iranian regime who was tasked by the regime to direct a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.”

The indictment includes allegations that an Iranian Revolutionary Guard member directed Shakeri to surveil and ultimately kill Trump. In addition to Shakeri, the US government has also charged two associates, Carlisle Rivera and Jonathon Loadholt, for their roles in similar plans targeting an American journalist and other individuals. Rivera and Loadholt faced a judge in New York and are currently detained as they await trial.

“Prosecutors say the 51-year-old used “a network of criminal associates”, from prison, including Mr Rivera and Mr Loadholt, to conduct surveillance on the Iranian government’s targets.

Mr Shakeri promised Mr Rivera and Mr Loadholt $100,000 to murder the American journalist, who had reported on the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses and corruption, prosecutors alleged. The journalist, who was not named, had been targeted in the past, prosecutors said.” Added BBC.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson has criticized these claims, saying they only serve to worsen US-Iran relations. Historically, accusations of Iranian plots to assassinate US figures have been made before, but Tehran has always disclaimed such claims. The spokesperson emphasized that these repeated allegations could create unnecessary tensions.

This incident is not the first time Trump has been under threat. In 2023 alone, he faced two assassination attempts. The first was during a rally in Pennsylvania, while the second involved a man pointing a rifle at him while golfing. These events underscore the ongoing safety concerns surrounding the former president.

Shakeri and his associates face serious legal consequences, including charges that carry potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy and murder-for-hire. The allegations extend beyond Trump, indicating a broader pattern of targeted threats against individuals who oppose the Iranian regime.
