Amazon Takes Steps to Combat Stock Shortages by Redirecting Customers to Additional Websites

In response to occasional stock shortages, Amazon is introducing a feature that directs customers to the websites of other brands when specific products are unavailable within its vast inventory. This update is currently being tested among a select group of customers in the United States. It aims to enhance the shopping experience by providing alternatives directly from the brands themselves.

The retail giant offers a catalog exceeding 300 million items. These items are eligible for fast, free delivery through its Prime service. Additionally, there are hundreds of millions of other products in total. However, the reality of not having a desired product in stock has prompted Amazon to innovate further in its customer service approach.

Founded on July 5, 1994, originally dubbed “Cadabra” by Jeff Bezos, who was then a young graduate from Princeton, Amazon began its journey in a garage in Bellevue, Washington.

Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to Amazon Inc., a nod to the vast river, chosen for its connotation of abundance, especially after a concern arose regarding the original name’s resemblance to “cadaver.”

In its early years, Amazon faced financial challenges typical of fledgling companies. A pivotal moment in its growth occurred during the transition from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of 1996 when revenues surged from $4.2 million to $8.5 million, alongside a reduction in quarterly losses. Although they still reported total losses of about $2.2 million during that period, the company’s revenue growth indicated a promising trend (Wilhelm, 2019).

After diversifying its offerings beyond books in 1998, 2001 marked the first profitable quarter for Amazon, following a successful holiday shopping season.

The year 2003 was a turning point, as the company enjoyed its first full year of profitability, with significant net profits jumping from $3 million in late 2002 to $73 million in the same quarter of 2003 (Hansell, 2004).

This turnaround brought the total profit to $35 million for the entire year. This is a big increase compared to the $149 million loss from the previous year. Amazon started as a modest online bookstore and grew into a f global player. Ultimately, it resulted in its status as one of the most successful companies worldwide (lsa.umich.edu).

In a recent update on its blog, Amazon remarked on its new approach. It highlighted that even products not carried in its inventory will be displayed in search results. These results will include links to the respective brand’s website to facilitate seamless purchasing.

Amazon has also started accepting new world currencies.

As of January 13, 2025, Amazon has expanded its payment options to include eight additional local currencies. Customers in the U.S. can now pay using Chilean Peso (CLP), Colombian Peso (COP), and Uruguayan Peso (UYU).

Meanwhile, AWS customers in Europe can use currencies such as Egyptian Pound (EGP), Nigerian Naira (NGN), Polish Zloty (PLN), Romanian Leu (RON), and Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH). Please note that CLP, COP, UYU, EGP, NGN, and UAH are available exclusively for credit card transactions.

The introduction of local currencies enhances the payment experience by allowing customers to sidestep foreign exchange fees. It also alleviates payment obstacles for those in regions where regulations limit access to foreign currency.
