Brendan Carr, the newly appointed chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and a Republican, is set to overturn the recent dismissal of three complaints against the media organizations ABC, NBC and CBS, a decision made just before his predecessor’s term ended. (newsmax)
Former chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, chose to reject these complaints in her final days in office, before Trump’s Inauguration, stating that they aimed to limit the freedom of the press.
“In a statement on Thursday, just days before she is set to step down, Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, said all four complaints were essentially political in nature. She described them as attempts to “weaponize the licensing authority of the FCC”. (The Guardian)
Among the complaints were issues involving the coverage of the presidential campaign and a specific grievance against Fox News Channel.
Under Carr’s direction, which began this past Monday with his appointment by President Donald Trump, there will be a revival of the complaints concerning ABC, NBC, and CBS. However, the complaint against Fox will not be investigated.
Sources inform that Carr intends to return the cases involving ABC, NBC, and CBS to an active status, allowing them to be evaluated on their individual merits. An insider noted that had Rosenworcel taken action a few weeks earlier, she might have prevented this reversal of her decisions.
The complaints in question were filed by the Center of American Rights, a conservative nonprofit organization. Specific allegations included claims that ABC News exhibited bias in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris during a presidential debate and critiques of CBS News’ editing of a “60 Minutes” interview with her.
Additionally, one complaint pointed to a lack of equal airtime when Harris guest-starred on “Saturday Night Live,” contrasting that with Trump’s zero coverage from the SNL show.
