On Sunday, June 15, 2025, Vance Luther Boelter, a 57-year-old Minnesota man, was apprehended after a nearly two-day manhunt for the targeted shootings of Democratic lawmakers in the Minneapolis suburbs.

The arrest marks the end of a tense search that gripped the state, following what Governor Tim Walz called a “politically motivated assassination.” Boelter now faces charges of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder.

The Incidents: A Tragic Day in Minnesota

The violent spree began in the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, around 2 a.m., when Boelter allegedly shot and killed Minnesota House Democratic Leader Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, at their home in Brooklyn Park.

In a separate attack in nearby Champlin, Boelter is accused of shooting and injuring State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Both incidents were described by authorities as targeted acts of political violence.

According to law enforcement, Boelter disguised himself as a police officer, using tactical gear and a fake squad car to gain access to the victims’ homes.

A manifesto found in his vehicle revealed a list of 70 potential targets, including prominent Minnesota Democrats like Governor Tim Walz and Senator Amy Klobuchar, as well as Planned Parenthood locations.

The document also contained “No Kings” references, possibly linked to anti-Trump protests.

Who Is Vance Boelter?

Vance Luther Boelter, a father of five, has a varied background. He worked for decades in the food industry before transitioning to agricultural projects in central Africa and later taking jobs at funeral service companies.

Boelter led Praetorian Guard Security Services, a Twin Cities-based private security firm that advertised “police-type vehicles” for residential patrols. He also described himself as a reverend and author, with ties to an evangelical ministry where he preached against abortion and the LGBTQ community.

Boelter’s friend and roommate, David Carlson, revealed that Boelter was staunchly anti-abortion, stating, “He thought it was murder.” This belief may have fueled his motives, as his manifesto targeted “prominent pro-choice individuals in Minnesota.”

Boelter served on the Minnesota Governor’s Workforce Development Board from 2016 to 2023, appointed by former Governor Mark Dayton and reappointed by Governor Tim Walz.

However, a board member clarified that the role did not involve regular interaction with the governor. Despite social media claims linking Boelter closely to Walz, these ties appear limited to his board appointment.

The Manhunt and Arrest

The search for Boelter intensified after authorities found his vehicle and a light-colored cowboy hat in Sibley County, about an hour from the crime scenes.

On Sunday evening, Minnesota State Patrol, aided by a multi-agency task force, located Boelter in a field near his Green Isle home.

A drone reportedly spotted him, and he surrendered without incident. Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Col. Jeremy Geiger confirmed, “When police closed in on Boelter in the woods, he surrendered without incident.”

Governor Walz praised law enforcement’s efforts, stating, “After a two-day manhunt, two sleepless nights, law enforcement have apprehended Vance Boelter.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey echoed this sentiment, saying, “I’m grateful that our law enforcement partners in Minnesota acted with urgency to arrest the shooter and bring him to justice.”

The Aftermath and Charges

Boelter’s arrest brought relief to a state on edge. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office unsealed a criminal complaint charging him with the murders of Melissa and Mark Hortman and the attempted murders of John and Yvette Hoffman. Both Hoffmans are recovering after surgery and are in stable condition.

The FBI had offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to Boelter’s arrest and conviction, underscoring the urgency of the case. Authorities continue to investigate the motive, with the manifesto suggesting a focus on pro-choice Democrats, though Boelter’s political affiliation was listed as “none or other” in state records.

A Call for Unity

Governor Walz condemned the attacks, calling for unity in the face of political violence: “Political violence cannot be the norm.” The shootings have sparked widespread grief, with memorials for Melissa Hortman, a former House Speaker from 2019 to 2025, appearing at the Minnesota State Capitol.

Her legislative work included advancing abortion rights, voting rights, and criminal justice reform.

As Minnesota processes this tragedy, the focus remains on justice for the victims and healing for a shaken community.

Boelter’s capture ends a harrowing chapter, but questions about his motives and the broader implications of political violence linger.
