Costco stands committed to its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policy, despite pressure from a new executive order

What has led to the scrutiny of Costco’s DEI policy?

Shareholders at Costco Wholesale decisively rejected a proposal that called for an assessment of the potential risks associated with the company’s DEI programs. This push comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s recent moves to roll back DEI initiatives at a national level since his administration began.

In a new executive order, Trump has put an end to the federal DEI policy. This directive asserts that the Biden Administration has implemented what it terms “illegal and immoral discrimination programs” under the guise of DEI, penetrating sectors of the Federal Government, including airline safety and military operations. (whitehouse.gov)

Nearly every federal agency has been tasked with drafting “Equity Action Plans” that unveil ways they have contributed to what the administration views as DEI’s overreach. The publicization of these plans has sparked criticism for fostering waste and discrimination.

Heads of agencies, are required to take specific actions within sixty days of the order’s issuance.

The OMB Director, with support from the Attorney General and the Director of OPM, is expected to oversee the dismantling of all forms of discriminatory programs.

What are DEI policies?

DEI policies encompass practices aimed at supporting or hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds and equipping them with the necessary resources to thrive.

The flip side to DEI policies is hiring for merit, meaning the person who is well qualified for the job, gets the job, nothing is based on race or gender.

Unlike numerous retailers that are scaling back on DEI initiatives, Costco has chosen to maintain its commitment to these policies.

This decision has elicited a range of reactions from consumers nationwide, with some advocating for the DEI initiatives while others lean towards traditional merit-based hiring practices.

Several major companies, such as Target, Amazon, Walmart, Lowe’s, Meta, John Deere, and Toyota, have either reduced or restricted their DEI strategies following the introduction of the executive order.
