Mysterious drones have been flying over New Jersey this past month, some as large as a car or SUV. Residents are asking for answers from the government. But government officials don’t have any clear answers.
Mysterious Drone Sightings in New Jerseys
Recent reports of large drones flying over parts of New Jersey have raised questions and concerns among both residents and local lawmakers. These sightings, which have become increasingly frequent, feature drones that appear to evade traditional detection methods.
The drones, reported to be up to 6 feet in diameter, have captured the attention of officials and residents alike.
The devices have been observed flying mostly at night and often without lights, leading to suspicions that they are not operated by hobbyists.
Sightings have spanned from New York City to western New Jersey and even parts of Pennsylvania, with many concentrated around sensitive areas such as the Picatinny Arsenal and Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster.
The rising number of sightings, which began last month, has created a palpable sense of worry among the public, particularly regarding their proximity to military installations and other sensitive sites. Local lawmakers are concerned about potential threats to public safety and privacy, especially given recent drone incursions at military locations both domestically and abroad.
Residents and officials have expressed frustration and anxiety regarding these drones, demanding clarification on their origins and purposes. Many municipal lawmakers are calling for stronger regulations on drone operation, leading to proposals for temporary bans on drone flights within the state.
In response to the situation, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have emphasized that no immediate threat to public safety is posed by these drones.
The FBI has launched an investigation and is currently soliciting any available videos, photos, or information from the public.
Amid growing frustrations, Congressmen Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew have urged military intervention, suggesting that drones posing a risk could be shot down.
Smith has cited an incident where multiple drones followed a Coast Guard vessel, though these were not deemed an immediate threat to operations.
“This is something we’re taking deadly seriously. I don’t blame people for being frustrated,” Murphy, a Democratic representative, said earlier this week.
“It’s illegal under federal law to shoot at an aircraft,” a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman told NJ Advance Media this week.
In a letter to the Pentagon, Smith highlighted that Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst has the capability to neutralize unauthorized unmanned aerial systems. However, Pentagon officials have indicated that their initial assessment does not attribute the sightings to foreign entities. Some have speculated that the drones are coming from China, Israel or middle eastern countries.
The mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey have sparked interest among state lawmakers, law enforcement, and the public. As investigations continue, the need for more comprehensive guidelines regulating drone usage is becoming increasingly clear.
