New York City; the Rise in Crime in Central Park

Central Park in New York is a large green space, with beautiful scenery, trees, a pond, large open sidewalks, and large grassy areas for picnicking and relaxing.

But in the past year, it has also seen a large jump in crime

“Year-to-date robbery incidents, for example, have increased by 200%, from 10 in 2023 to 30 in 2024.

Major crimes are up 46% in the park compared to 2023. Felony assault is also up – from 7 incidents to 10 – but misdemeanor assault and petit larceny are down significantly, about 22% and 19% respectively.

Two rapes have been reported in the park so far this year, according to NYPD data. There have been no murders in the park in 2024, nor were there any last year.” According to patch.com.

The New York Post wrote a news story about the park and stated “In a shocking early morning attack on Oct. 26, a man brutally beat and attempted to rape a 38-year-old woman near 85 East Drive in the northern end of the park, the NYPD said, releasing a photo of the bicycle-riding sicko.

The assailant approached and “pushed the victim over a metal fence, punched her in the face multiple times, and attempted to rape her,” police said. They are still hunting for him. Increasing crime in the once-peaceful space is “scary,” parkgoers told The Post.”

Also, the New York Police Department has reassigned and moved commanding officer Captain Anthony Lavino, to another precinct. He’s being replaced by Capt. Timothy Magliente.

Captain Lavino was part of the precinct that was in charge of the safety in Central Park. Now a new Police officer, Captain Magliente is taking over the position. According to the Post.
