Shane Tamura: The Manhattan Shooting Incident at 345 Park Avenue

On July 28, 2025, a shooting rocked Midtown Manhattan, leaving five dead, including a New York City police officer.

The gunman, tentatively identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, Nevada, opened fire inside a high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue before taking his own life.

Who Was Shane Tamura?

Shane Devon Tamura was a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident with ties to California and Hawaii.

Born in Hawaii, he later moved to Las Vegas, where he lived before the incident.

Tamura was a standout high school football player, playing as a running back at Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita, California, and later at Granada Hills High School, graduating in 2016.

According to MaxPreps.com, during his 2015 season at Granada Hills, he rushed for 616 yards on 126 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per carry, and scored five touchdowns.

A former teammate, Caleb Clarke, described him as a “goofball” and “class clown,” full of energy and humor during their high school days. “You never would have thought violence was something you’d associate with him,” Clarke told NBC News.

Tamura reportedly held a concealed carry permit issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in June 2022, valid for five years, though an expired private investigator license was also linked to him.

Most recently, he worked as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino, according to the New York Post. Authorities noted that Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues, though specifics remain undisclosed.

The Shooting at 345 Park Avenue

The shooting occurred on July 28, 2025, at approximately 6:28 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan’s financial district, near Grand Central Terminal and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Tamura, armed with a Palmetto State Armory AR-15-style rifle and wearing body armor, exited a double-parked BMW and entered the building’s lobby.

Surveillance footage captured him immediately opening fire, targeting an off-duty NYPD officer, a security guard, and others. He then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he continued his rampage before fatally shooting himself in the chest in a hallway.

The building at 345 Park Avenue houses major corporate tenants, including the headquarters of Blackstone, a global private equity firm, the National Football League (NFL), and the accounting firm KPMG. The 33rd floor, where Tamura ended his life, is occupied by Rudin Management, a real estate company that owns and manages the building and other properties across New York City.

The Victims

The shooting claimed five lives, including:

  • Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old off-duty NYPD officer from the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, was working a private security detail at the building. He was married with two children and expecting a third.
  • A security guard and three civilians, whose identities have not been publicly released pending family notifications. One additional civilian was critically injured.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams called the incident a “senseless act of gun violence,” expressing grief over the loss of Officer Islam and the other victims.

Motive and Mental Health

The motive behind Tamura’s actions remains unclear. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, “We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location.”

Authorities confirmed Tamura acted alone, and no immediate evidence suggests accomplices. His documented mental health history, as noted by Las Vegas law enforcement, is under investigation, with police examining his car, phone, and computer for clues.

Items found in his vehicle included a rifle case, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and prescription medication.

Unverified claims and conspiracy theories have circulated online, particularly on social media platforms.

Some users speculated that Tamura’s attack was motivated by a failed football career and unfulfilled NFL aspirations, given the presence of the NFL headquarters in the building.

One X post claimed, “NFL headquarters were located at that building and could be a possible motive. Tamura was a standout RB that graduated in 2016.” However, police have not confirmed any connection between Tamura and the NFL, and these claims remain speculative.

Other theories suggest Tamura targeted Blackstone or another corporate tenant, but no evidence supports this. The lack of a clear motive has fueled online debates, with some users alleging a broader conspiracy involving systemic failures or hidden agendas.

These claims lack substantiation and should be treated with skepticism until official investigations provide clarity.

Additional Context and Impact

Tamura’s cross-country journey from Las Vegas to New York began on July 26, 2025, with stops in Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before he arrived in Manhattan on the day of the shooting. His BMW, parked outside the building, was searched for explosives but none were found.

This shooting, the second high-profile incident in Midtown Manhattan within a year, has reignited debates about gun control, mental health, and public safety.

The previous incident, in December 2024, involved a targeted attack on a healthcare executive. The loss of Officer Islam, a dedicated officer and family man, has deeply affected the NYPD and the community.

The July 28, 2025, shooting at 345 Park Avenue by Shane Tamura left a lasting impact on New York City.

A former high school football star with a documented mental health history, Tamura’s motives remain under investigation. The tragedy claimed five lives, including a heroic NYPD officer, and raised questions about mental health support and gun violence prevention.
