On June 14, 2025, Minnesota was rocked by two devastating acts of political violence targeting Democratic lawmakers.

State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot at their home in Brooklyn Park.

In a separate incident, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were wounded in a attack at their home in Champlin. Authorities have identified 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter as the suspect, who remains at large.

The Incidents: When and Where Did They Happen?

The first shooting occurred around 2:00 a.m. on June 14, 2025, in Champlin, a suburb north of Minneapolis. Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times at their home.

Both underwent surgery and are recovering at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, with Governor Tim Walz stating he is “cautiously optimistic” about their survival.

Approximately 90 minutes later, at around 3:30 a.m., police responded to the home of Representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park, about five miles away.

Officers found Hortman and her husband, Mark, shot and killed. The suspect, dressed as a police officer and driving a vehicle resembling a police SUV, was seen at the scene and exchanged gunfire with police before fleeing on foot.

Who Were the Victims?

Melissa Hortman, 55, was a prominent figure in Minnesota politics, serving as a Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) state representative since 2004.

She was House Speaker from 2019 to 2025 and later the House DFL Caucus Leader. Known for her work on clean energy, education, and transportation, Hortman was a trained lawyer with degrees from Boston University, the University of Minnesota Law School, and Harvard’s Kennedy School. She and her husband, Mark, had two children.

John Hoffman

John Hoffman, 60, has been a DFL state senator since 2012, representing Champlin. He chairs the Senate’s Human Services Committee and focuses on issues like aging and older adult services.

Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, have one child. Both are in stable condition following surgery, recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Both Hortman and Hoffman were Democrats, advocating for progressive policies in Minnesota’s closely divided legislature.

Who Is the Suspect?

Vance Luther Boelter, a 57-year-old resident of Green Isle, Minnesota, is the prime suspect in these shootings.

Authorities identified him based on evidence found at the crime scenes, including a fake police SUV with emergency lights and a set of writings, described as a “manifesto,” recovered from the vehicle.

The manifesto contained a list of targets, including Hortman, Hoffman, Governor Tim Walz, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, Senator Tina Smith, and Attorney General Keith Ellison—all Democrats.

Boelter allegedly wore a realistic latex mask and a police uniform, complete with a badge and Taser, to impersonate an officer and gain access to the victims’ homes.

A text message sent by Boelter to his alleged roommate after the shootings read, “I made some choices, and you guys don’t know anything about this, but I’m going to be gone for a while. May be dead shortly,” further implicating him.

Why Is Boelter the Suspected

  • Physical Evidence: The fake police SUV, writings, and manifesto were found at Hortman’s home, directly linking Boelter to the crimes.
  • Eyewitness Accounts: Police encountered Boelter at Hortman’s residence, where he exchanged gunfire before fleeing.
  • Target List: The list of Democratic lawmakers found in the vehicle suggests a premeditated, politically motivated attack. A stack of papers with “No Kings” remarks on them were also found in the suspect’s.
    • The ” No Kings ” pages were a reference to the anti-Trump rallies that were organized by Democratic NGO’S scheduled for June 14th.

Where Is Boelter Now?

Boelter remains at large, prompting a massive manhunt across Minnesota. He is described as 6’1”, 220 pounds, with brown hair and eyes, possibly wearing a light-colored cowboy hat and light pants.

The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. Authorities believe he is no longer in the Brooklyn Park area but consider him armed and dangerous.

According to multiple news sources, Jenny Boelter, the wife of Minnesota shooting suspect Vance Luther Boelter, was detained and questioned after a traffic stop near Onamia, Minnesota, on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Authorities reportedly found a weapon, ammunition, cash, and multiple passports in her vehicle.

No arrests were made, and it’s unclear whether the stop was random or targeted

Boelter meticulously planned the attacks, exploiting public trust in law enforcement. He:

  • Posed as a Police Officer: Wore a realistic costume, including a latex mask, badge, and tactical gear, and drove a vehicle equipped with flashing lights and a ramming bumper.
  • Targeted Homes: Attacked the Hoffmans at 2:00 a.m. in Champlin, then drove to Hortman’s home in Brooklyn Park by 3:30 a.m.
  • Used Firearms: Shot the victims multiple times, killing Hortman and her husband and wounding the Hoffmans.
  • Fled the Scene: Exchanged gunfire with police at Hortman’s home before escaping on foot.

The use of a fake police vehicle and uniform allowed Boelter to approach the victims’ homes without immediate suspicion, highlighting the chilling precision of the attacks.

Boelter’s Background and Political Affiliations

Government Appointments

Boelter was appointed to the nonpartisan Governor’s Workforce Development Council in 2016 by then-Governor Mark Dayton and reappointed in 2019 by Governor Tim Walz.

Both Hortman and Hoffman served on these boards with Boelter, suggesting “some overlap” with the victims, according to officials. These appointments were not based on political affiliation, as the council focuses on workforce development issues.

Little is publicly known about the suspect’s, Boelter’s, political views, as he was not a prominent political figure. However, the manifesto and target list suggest strong anti-Democrat sentiments, possibly driven by opposition to progressive policies.

Sources indicate that he may have been afflited with the Democratic Party, but may have switched to a Republican affiliation, but it’s unclear if what party he is currently associated with.

The of his victims specifically targeted pro-choice Democrats, hinting at ideological motives related to social issues like abortion.

While the exact motive remains under investigation, here are three plausible theories based on available evidence:

  1. Political Polarization: Boelter may have been radicalized by the increasingly divisive political climate in the U.S., particularly following contentious debates over immigration, abortion, and gun control.
  2. Personal Grievances: Boelter’s prior interactions with Hortman and Hoffman on the Workforce Development Council could indicate a personal or professional grudge. The “overlap” mentioned by officials might point to unresolved conflicts that escalated into violence.
  3. Lone-Wolf Extremism: The manifesto and elaborate planning suggest Boelter acted as a lone-wolf attacker, inspired by extremist rhetoric online or in media. His focus on pro-choice Democrats could align with far-right ideologies, though no direct affiliations have been confirmed.

Additional Information from Political Affiliates

Governor Tim Walz

  • “This was an act of targeted political violence. Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy. We don’t settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint.”
  • “Our state lost a great leader, and I lost the dearest of friends. Speaker Hortman was someone who served the state of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humor, and a sense of service.”
  • “We are not a country that settles our differences at gunpoint. We have demonstrated again and again in our state that it is possible to peacefully disagree.”

President Donald Trump

  • “The shootings appear to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated.”

These statements reflect bipartisan condemnation of the attacks, with Walz emphasizing unity and Trump calling for justice.

The manifesto and target list indicate Boelter’s actions were driven by political ideology, specifically targeting Democrats associated with progressive policies.

His focus on pro-choice lawmakers suggests opposition to abortion rights, a divisive issue in U.S. politics.

The impersonation of a police officer and the premeditated nature of the attacks point to a calculated effort to punish or intimidate Democratic leaders, aligning with patterns of politically motivated violence in recent years.

Additional Important Information

  • Bipartisan Condemnation: Minnesota’s entire congressional delegation issued a joint statement: “Today we speak with one voice to express our outrage, grief, and condemnation of this horrible attack on public servants. There is no place in our democracy for politically-motivated violence.”
  • Context of Political Tensions: The shootings followed a heated congressional hearing on June 12, 2025, where Walz defended Minnesota’s sanctuary policies for undocumented immigrants, drawing criticism from Republicans. This backdrop may have fueled extremist sentiments.
  • Impact on Minnesota: The attacks have heightened fears among lawmakers, with police now stationed outside their homes. Walz urged the public to avoid political rallies until Boelter is apprehended.
  • Tributes to Hortman: Colleagues described her as a “formidable public servant” and “tremendous leader.” Senator Amy Klobuchar called the shootings “a stunning act of violence.”

As Minnesota mourns the loss of Melissa Hortman and prays for the recovery of John and Yvette Hoffman, the search for Vance Boelter continues, with hopes of bringing justice to the victims and their families.
