The Israeli military and war in Gaza is ongoing, leaves 5,000 more fatalities in the last 100 days.
(aljazeera.com) After 100 days of conflict, the Israeli siege in northern Gaza has resulted in over 5,000 people either dead or missing. Despite ongoing discussions for a ceasefire, the Israeli military’s actions have intensified, with escalated assaults throughout the Gaza region.
The Government Media Office in Gaza has condemned the siege as an extreme form of ethnic cleansing, causing widespread displacement and devastation affecting hundreds of thousands of residents in this war-torn region.
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, described northern Gaza as eerily deserted, filled with destruction and debris. Yet, some residents cling to life, choosing to remain despite the overwhelming destruction around them. She noted that Palestinians are being relentlessly targeted throughout the Gaza Strip, regardless of their location—be it in schools, emergency shelters, or hospitals.
The ongoing siege has led to discussions among Israeli politicians and settler groups about the potential for establishing settlements in northern Gaza, indicating no intention of lifting the siege anytime soon.
Recent reports indicated that Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in the Mukhabarat area of northern Gaza City, followed by drone strikes that claimed the life of a young man in the Shati refugee camp. Heavy bombardments occurred overnight in northwestern Gaza City, resulting in at least eight casualties when an Israeli strike hit a school used as a shelter, which the military described as a Hamas “command and control center.”
The situation for children in Gaza is particularly dire, with at least 70 reported fatalities among minors within just five days due to the relentless attacks. Multiple locations, including the Bureij refugee camp, faced frequent assaults.
A new evacuation order, demanding residents vacate residential areas in the northern Nuseirat refugee camp, was issued by the Israeli military, emphasizing the fatal risks of the remaining.
The Gaza Civil Defence reported on Sunday that in the past five days alone, the Israeli actions have led to the deaths of 70 children throughout the area.
As the hostilities continue, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sent high-ranking officials, including the heads of Mossad and Shin Bet, to Qatar to expedite negotiations regarding both captives in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners.
In discussions with President Joe Biden, the urgency for a ceasefire and the return of hostages was emphasized. Biden’s national security adviser stated that the involved parties were “very close” to finalizing an agreement, but significant hurdles remain.
Despite ongoing protests in Tel Aviv advocating for a peaceful resolution, far-right ministers within Netanyahu’s coalition pose a threat to the government’s stability, expressing discontent with any potential deals.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza exacerbates as military actions continue to obstruct humanitarian aid, leading to dangerous conditions that allow for the looting of relief convoys. UNICEF reports that nearly all of the 1.1 million children in Gaza require mental health support in light of the ongoing violence and harsh living circumstances as winter approaches.
The United Nations estimates that nearly 19,000 Palestinian children have been left orphaned since the conflict began, which has seen over 46,000 reported Palestinian fatalities and more than 109,000 injuries, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. As of Sunday, at least 28 Palestinians were killed in a single day.
