June 5, 2025 – a feud erupted between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, escalating from policy disagreements to personal attacks on social media platforms Truth Social and X.
What began as a dispute over Trump’s signature legislation, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” spiraled into Musk making a bombshell claim about Trump’s alleged ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
The “One Big Beautiful Bill” and the Disagreement
The “One Big Beautiful Bill” is a massive Republican-backed legislative package that passed the House in May 2025 by a single vote.
The bill aims to overhaul the U.S. economy through significant tax cuts, increased debt ceiling provisions, and reductions in programs.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, it could add $2.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade and leave 10.9 million Americans uninsured.
Musk, who recently stepped down as Special Advisor to Trump’s administration and former figurehead of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), fiercely opposed the bill.
He criticized its hefty price tag and deficit impact, calling it a “disgusting abomination” in a June 3, 2025, post on X: “Elon Musk Turns on Trump, Calls President’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ a ‘Disgusting Abomination.’”
On June 5, Musk escalated his criticism, posting on X, “False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!” He argued the legislation undermined DOGE’s efforts to streamline government spending.
Trump, in response, defended the bill during a White House press conference on June 5, 2025, saying, “This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress.”
He expressed disappointment in Musk, stating, “Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” and suggested Musk was upset because the bill eliminated an electric vehicle tax credit, impacting Tesla.
Trump further jabbed at Musk on Truth Social, claiming, “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV mandate that forced everyone to buy electric cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went crazy!”
The Epstein Allegation
The feud took a personal turn when Musk made a shocking claim on X at 3:10 PM EDT on June 5, 2025: “Time to drop the really big bomb:
@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”
He followed up with, “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.” Musk provided no evidence to support this claim, which referenced Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and convicted sex offender who died in 2019.
Epstein’s ties to high-profile figures, including Trump, Bill Clinton, and Prince Andrew, have long fueled public speculation.
Trump did not directly address the Epstein allegation but responded on Truth Social, saying, “I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago.” Earlier documents released in February 2025 under Trump’s executive order, known as “Phase 1” of the Epstein files, included flight logs showing Trump as a passenger on Epstein’s private jet seven times in the 1990s, though no new incriminating evidence has surfaced.
Musk, claiming credit for Trump’s election victory, Musk posted on X, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.
Such ingratitude.” He even endorsed a post calling for Trump’s impeachment, further fueling the fire.
Trump retaliated by threatening to cut Musk’s government contracts, including those for SpaceX, stating on Truth Social, “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”
The fallout had immediate financial repercussions.
Tesla’s stock plummeted over 14%, wiping out $153 billion in market value on June 5, 2025, following Trump’s comments.
Democrats seized the opportunity, demanding the release of the full Epstein files and urging Congress to “kill the bill.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed Musk’s Epstein claim, stating, “This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.”
Trump’s earlier comments on the Epstein files, from a March 2025 interview with Full Measure, highlighted his stance on transparency: “The American people are entitled to know the truth. The man’s dead as Jimmy Hoffa—he’s gone—and his sidekick’s in jail.
We’re entitled to know what he did, who he did it with, and whether he broke any laws.” Despite this, the “Phase 1” Epstein files released in February 2025 contained no major revelations, disappointing those expecting bombshell disclosures.
Musk’s history of commenting on Epstein also surfaced.
In October 2024, he faced scrutiny for his own ties to Epstein and Sean “Diddy” Combs, raising questions about the credibility of his allegations against Trump.
Musk’s reaction to Trump saying he’s cutting contracts with Musk’s Space X spacecraft.
Donald Trump threatened to cancel government contracts with Elon Musk’s companies, including SpaceX, as a way to cut federal spending.
Musk’s Response:
“In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately”
This feud is a collision of policy, and unproven allegations, reflecting the volatile nature of high-stakes political alliances.
Musk’s claim about Trump and the Epstein files is a serious accusation, but without evidence, it feels more like a retaliatory jab than a substantiated truth.
Trump’s threats to cut Musk’s contracts, meanwhile, seem like a power play to silence dissent.
The disagreement over the “Big Beautiful Bill” exposes deeper tensions: Musk’s push for fiscal restraint clashes with Trump’s grandiose economic vision, which critics argue prioritizes tax breaks over sustainability.
The real loser here is the discourse, and personal attacks that overshadow the bill’s actual impact on Americans.
