On May 13, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump embarked on a significant four-day trip to the Middle East, marking his first major international visit of his second term.

The tour begins in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and will continue with stops in Qatar on May 14, followed by the United Arab Emirates on May 15, before concluding on May 16. This high-profile journey has drawn global attention as Trump aims to deepen ties with Gulf allies and secure substantial economic agreements.

Trump’s main goal is to foster economic partnerships and secure investments for the United States.

During his visit to Saudi Arabia, he signed a massive $142 billion defense sales deal and announced $600 billion in Saudi commitments to American companies, particularly in artificial intelligence and technology sectors.

Trump stated in a speech at a U.S.-Saudi investment summit, “We are adding $1 trillion in investments from this Middle East tour.” Beyond economics, Trump is also addressing regional stability, expressing intentions to remove sanctions on Syria to give the country a “chance at greatness” and issuing a stern warning to Iran, calling it the “most destructive force” in the region.

Trump is accompanied by a powerful delegation, though specific names have not been fully disclosed in public reports. However, recent events suggest key figures like Jared Kushner, who was present at a related White House ceremony earlier this month, might be involved. Elon Musk was also seen with Trump and other delegates.

Additionally, business leaders from U.S. technology firms are part of the trip, focusing on AI and tech deals, as seen during the Saudi-American investment forum in Riyadh.

The president has several clear objectives. First, he aims to secure over $1 trillion in investments from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, emphasizing business over traditional diplomacy.

Second, Trump is pushing for regional stability by supporting a new Syrian government and addressing Iran’s influence, threatening “massive maximum pressure” if Iran continues to destabilize the region. Lastly, while normalizing Israel-Saudi relations was a hope, reports indicate this goal is currently off the table, with Israel notably absent from Trump’s itinerary despite its ongoing conflicts in Gaza.

Additional Information

  1. A Controversial Gift Offer: Just before the trip, Qatar offered Trump a luxury jet, though it’s unclear as of right now if he accepted the gift, which could be one of the largest foreign gifts ever received by a U.S. president.
  2. Saudi Arabia’s Mediator Role: Earlier in 2025, Saudi Arabia hosted U.S.-Russia backchannel talks, positioning itself as a neutral mediator. Trump is expected to praise Riyadh publicly while pushing for a Gulf-led ceasefire initiative, which could boost both his and Saudi Arabia’s global standing if successful.
  3. Tech and Nuclear Ambitions: The UAE and Saudi Arabia are heavily focused on becoming AI hubs, and Trump’s visit includes discussions on U.S. semiconductor exports and potential nuclear energy deals, reflecting the Gulf’s growing interest in advanced technology.

Trump’s visit comes amid heightened tensions in the region. Israel, excluded from the itinerary, is planning a major military escalation in Gaza if a hostage and ceasefire deal isn’t reached soon, with some officials citing Trump’s trip as a deadline.

Additionally, Trump’s focus on business deals over diplomacy has sparked debate, with some analysts arguing that Gulf states may hold more leverage over U.S. foreign policy than Trump anticipates. The president’s schedule includes a state dinner in Riyadh before traveling to Qatar, where further investment talks are expected.

As the visit unfolds, its outcomes could reshape U.S.-Gulf relations and influence stability in the Middle East.
