According to the U.S Border Patrol, the future is looking more optimistic since Trump’s election. The dynamics within the border agencies have shifted with the recent election outcomes.
Many agents initially expressed intentions to retire if President Trump did not win. But things have changed as agents are now reconsidering their plans. With the hope for positive change, agents feel inclined to serve under the current administration once again.
According to Fox and The Department of Homeland Security, illegal border crossings surged under President Biden, nearly 3 million illegal crossings in 2024. And more than 10.8 million illegal border crossings since 2021.
Trump has already spoke about deportations of illegal immigrants. On Monday, he has already confirmed and is ready to appoint Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE), to serve as “border czar” in his second administration. “
“It’s a total 180. Troops are finally feeling like the sun is coming out after a very long storm,” one Massachusetts ICE officer said. “People are fired up to have support. It’s amazing because we all became so numb. I don’t think we realized how bad until we finally have hope again. Everyone is so happy about Homan’s return.”
Now, agents who once planned to retire are opting to stay, feeling optimistic by the prospects under Trump’s administration. The current atmosphere is described as happy among many agents who believe that improvements are on the horizon. As the administration sets new policies, expectations for the future of border security are rising.
Agents have previously committed to retiring but are now holding off.
“The morale is through the roof,” National Border Patrol Council President Paul Perez said in an interview. “We’ve received hundreds of calls, texts, emails just saying how happy the agents are.”
One U.S Border Patrol Agent from Texas said
“I feel that people know now they will get to do the work they signed up to do and that they want to do,” a senior ICE official said. “They know they can get the bad guys now. Public safety threats, national security threats, gang members, here we come.”
