On January 5th, the first aircraft carrying high-threat illegal migrants landed at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Among these individuals are suspected members of the notorious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA), as reported by sources within the Department of Homeland Security.
This gang is recognized as an international criminal organization responsible for spreading violence across several U.S. cities, from New York to Colorado. The White House has described the gang’s tactics as excessively brutal, including drug and human trafficking, posing a threat to the United States as well as other countries.
Upon arrival at the Guantanamo facility, the ten high-threat migrants are being accommodated in empty detention structures, separated from individuals detained due to the war on terror currently at the base.
Recently, the White House issued a memorandum directing the defense secretary and the Department of Homeland Security to utilize the resources at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay for housing such criminal migrants as they are deported from the U.S. This directive aims to prepare the facility to accommodate up to 30,000 individuals.
The memorandum instructs the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security to undertake all necessary measures to fully operationalize the migrant operations center at Guantanamo. This is intended to create additional detention capacity for those deemed high-priority criminal aliens living unlawfully in the country (defence.gov).
Plans are underway to hold these “worst of the worst” criminals at the detention center until arrangements can be made for their repatriation. Most deported individuals are being flown back to their native countries using U.S. military aircraft, a practice that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled as a new initiative.
In situations where agreements for returning those individuals may take longer to finalize, additional arrangements are required, which is why the Department of Defense is seeking a secure interim location. Guantanamo Bay is considered an ideal option for safely detaining these individuals while repatriation processes unfold.
Hegseth expressed that the detention facility serves as a temporary holding area for those awaiting their return home or transfer to a safer third country (wunc.org). He emphasized the importance of maintaining security during this transitional period. The use of Guantanamo has been described as a tactically sound choice for managing this high-risk population.
The Defense Secretary remarked that utilizing Naval Station Guantanamo Bay as a waypoint for transferring high-threat undocumented migrants is an evolving strategy designed to facilitate the humane return of those who rightfully do not belong in the United States.
