Germany finds itself on the brink of its second leadership change in a span of less than four years, following the victory of Friedrich Merz, leader of the center-right opposition, in Sunday’s election.
This election marked a notable rise for the far-right party, alongside a significant loss for the outgoing Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.
Trump expressed his consensus on Sunday as Merz’s triumph brought an end to the tenure of Social Democrat Chancellor Scholz. With the abandonment of Scholz’s coalition government in November, the responsibility now falls on Merz to reestablish stability in Germany, the most populous nation in the European Union and a historically influential player, boasting the continent’s largest economy.
Merz faces challenges as he aims to address pressing matters including economic policies, energy solutions, and illegal immigration in Germany. He underscored these themes as central points for the upcoming coalition discussions, emphasizing their prominence throughout his campaign.
The rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in parliament, where they have doubled their representation, was characterized by Merz as an “alarming signal” needing urgent attention from the new government.
Exit polls indicated that the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) emerged victorious in the recent national election, while the AfD secured an impressive second-place finish, garnering 20.8% of the votes.
Though it is unlikely that the AfD will collaborate with the incoming coalition, their increased support from the last election marks a significant milestone for the party.
Endorsed by figures such as Trump and Elon Musk, the AfD, spearheaded by leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, feels they have generated a wave of momentum leading into the next election, anticipated in 2029.
Historically, the Union and Social Democrats dominated post-World War II German politics, but their support has been in decline for the past two decades, as the political scene continues to diversify. The results from Sunday reflect their weakest electoral performance since the inception of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949.
Why has Scholz and the far left been criticized by the German public?
There have been demonstrations against Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the past, in various forms, including a notable protest in January 2024. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin witnessed a gathering of heavy vehicles, with farmers voicing their dissent on one occasion, while truck drivers rallied on another.
These protests highlighted a significant discontent among the German populace regarding Scholz’s government. Although it ascended to power a little over two years ago with a vision for progressive change, many citizens now perceive it as ineffective and chaotic.
On the day of the truck drivers’ protest, organizers expressed their demands to reverse recent increases in highway tolls and voiced strong opposition to carbon pricing.
The coalition of the two previous center-left parties alongside a pro-business counterpart have contributed to growing frustration among the populace, as lengthy debates over poorly communicated projects have sparked concerns about potential new expenses.
As Germany navigates this political landscape, Merz has also been a vocal advocate for Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia, illustrating his commitment to international issues alongside domestic challenges.
