Michigan Walmart Stabbing: Violence Shocks a Small Community

Police investigating a mass stabbing at a Walmart near Traverse City, Michigan

On July 26, 2025, a stabbing spree occurred at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, leaving 11 people injured. The incident, described as a random act of violence, has left the community shaken.

When and Where Did the Stabbing Happen?

The attack took place at a Walmart Supercenter near Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, around 4:45 p.m.

The stabbings began near the checkout lanes inside the store, a busy area where shoppers were caught off guard.

Traverse City, a small community of about 16,000 people known for its beaches and annual cherry festival, is located 150 miles north of Grand Rapids and 255 miles northwest of Detroit.

Who Is the Suspect?

The suspect is Bradford James Gille, a 42-year-old man from Afton, Michigan, in Cheboygan County.

Authorities say Gille acted alone and used a standard folding knife to attack victims.

He has a history of prior assault incidents and controlled substance violations, according to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea.

Gille was taken into custody within minutes of the attack and faces serious charges, including one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. His arraignment is expected on July 28 or 29, 2025.

As of now, authorities have not determined a clear motive for the attack. Sheriff Shea described the stabbings as “random acts,” with no indication that the victims were specifically targeted.

The Grand Traverse County Prosecutor, Noelle Moeggenberg, stated that the terrorism charge is being pursued because the attack was a “very random act of violence” intended to “put fear in the entire community, to change how maybe we operate on a daily basis.”

Detectives, with assistance from the FBI, are still investigating to uncover why Gille carried out this violent act.

Who Were the Victims?

Eleven people were injured in the stabbing, including one Walmart employee.

The victims, both men and women, ranged in age from 29 to 84. As of Sunday, July 27, 2025, Munson Medical Center in Traverse City reported that one victim had been treated and released, four were in serious condition, and six were in fair condition.

All are expected to survive, with the hospital noting “encouraging signs of recovery” among the patients.

The victims were not predetermined, and the attack appeared to be entirely random.

What Happened in the Parking Lot?

The attack was stopped thanks to the brave actions of bystanders, including vigilant citizens and a couple of Marines, who confronted Gille in the Walmart parking lot.

Video footage circulating on social media showed a group of people, including one armed with a pistol, yelling at Gille to “throw the knife away” and “get on the ground.”

One witness, Steven Carter, who was loading his truck in the parking lot, saw the suspect, Gille harming a victim and later observed shoppers surrounding and attempting to stop the suspect.

The group of five or six people repeatedly shouted for Gille to drop the knife, and he responded, “I don’t care, I don’t care,” before someone tackled and subdued him. Sheriff Shea praised the citizens, saying, “What they did was amazing,” and noted their actions likely prevented further harm.

Community and Official Response

The incident has left Traverse City, a peaceful tourist destination, in shock. Sheriff Shea emphasized that such violence is “very uncommon” for the area but urged the public to “be vigilant” as “no area is immune to this type of activity.” Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her support, stating, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”

Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a Traverse City resident, also shared his condolences, saying he and his husband were “shaken by the awful and senseless violence.”

Walmart issued a statement condemning the attack: “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders.”

The store remains closed as authorities continue their investigation, and Walmart is providing counseling services to its associates.
