The Rothschild Surrealist Ball.

Did you know the Rothschilds threw out of the norm parties? Of course they did.

According to news outlets, the last big Rothschild party was in 1972. The photos can be unsettling and unforgettable.

The Surrealist Ball of 1972, was orchestrated by Baroness Marie-Hélène de Rothschild and her husband Guy at the Château de Ferrières.

When your lineage boasts the most immense private fortune in history, it’s fitting to host a party in France. At this soirée, guests had costumes conceived by Salvador Dalí, while Audrey Hepburn made a statement in a birdcage hat (video below).

Reactions on social media echo questions, with some wondering what Stanley Kubrick would think, while others, comparing the costumes to “Batman Returns” to ” EYES WIDE SHUT”.

The Rothschilds, did not disappoint on December 12, 1972.

This night saw stars, from Audrey Hepburn to Salvador Dalí, convene at the Château Ferrières for a Surrealist Ball. Their unparalleled wealth may be beyond reach for most.

Baroness Marie-Hélène, alongside Baron Guy de Rothschild, who helmed the de Rothschild Frères bank, was a prominent figure in Paris’s social elite. Her soirées attracted guests from around the globe, featuring names like Grace Kelly, Andy Warhol, and Yves Saint Laurent, attesting to her reputation as the queen of the Parisian social scene.

Unique invitations set the tone for the evening, printed backward to require a mirror for deciphering. Upon finally figuring out the hidden message, guests such as Salvador Dalí and Audrey Hepburn learned the dress code: “black tie, long dresses & surrealist heads.”

The Invitations..

Beyond the concept of a party, the event transformed Château de Ferrières into an art installation. As attendees arrived , they were greeted by butlers impersonating cats (yes cats).

Once they emerged from a maze labyrinth, guests entered a dining room bursting with strange surrealism .

The dining experience was different…with furry plates and dishes served on mannequin torsos, according to several news articles and social media, while strange utensils, such as dead fish, replaced traditional forks.

The multi-course menu brimmed with strange puns, offering bizarre choices like “sir-loin” and “extra-lucid”.

No two guests read the same words on the menu, ensuring that dining became a mystery.

According to history and several articles, the party was different and seeped in curiosity. The photos are something that are not seen on a normal day, or any traditional party…they called this surrealism…
