In a likely act of terrorism, a truck plowed into a crowded area at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets in New Orleans, leaving at least 14 people dead and 35 injured. The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day, just as celebrations were winding down and before the highly anticipated Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The FBI has identified the suspected driver as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old resident of Texas. Following the attack, Jabbar’s whereabouts were traced back to Houston, where the FBI discovered what were described as remnants of bomb-making materials in his home.
A senior law enforcement official confirmed this detail as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities reported that Jabbar acted alone in what they termed an “evil act,” noting that his actions were “100% inspired by ISIS.” Days before the attack,
Jabbar had allegedly posted messages on Facebook expressing support for the terrorist organization. This has raised significant concerns regarding domestic terrorism and the influence of extremist ideologies.
The New Orleans community is in shock as they cope with the aftermath of the tragic event. Vigils and memorials are planned to honor the victims, while local officials urge the public to remain vigilant.
FBI has also put out a call for tips.According to wdso.com, “The FBI has confiscated three of Jabbar’s phones and two laptops from an Airbnb in St. Roch.””Surveillance images obtained by the FBI show Jabbar walking down Dauphine Street near Governor Nicholls Street before placing the coolers with the IEDs at the intersection of Bourbon and Orleans and Bourbon and Toulouse.”
The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies working to uncover any potential connections or further threats. Sources also are stating that there is no connection between the Bourbon Street attack and a Tesla car that exploded in front a hotel in Las Vegas. (wdso.com)
(www.fbi.gov) FBI stated online, responding to the vehicle attack in New Orleans saying, “An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.”Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter.
The FBI’s special agent bomb technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe. “The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism. We are aggressively running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the subject.”
The FBI has set up a digital tip line, and we ask anyone with information or video of the incident to submit them to http://www.fbi.gov/bourbonstreetattack or call 1-800-CALL-FBI. “
