What role is DOGE playing at the Department of Social Security?
Elon Musk (Archives)

Lee Dudek, the acting head of the Social Security Administration, addressed the involvement of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) within the agency and provided clarification on allegations involving deceased individuals receiving benefits.

Dudek emphasized that DOGE represents a vital aspect of President Trump’s initiative to tackle fraud, waste, and inefficiencies, striving for a government that better serves its citizens.

He clarified the limitations placed on DOGE personnel who have been assigned to the Social Security Administration. “It’s essential to understand that DOGE staff are not authorized to alter agency systems, process benefit payments, or modify any information. Their access is strictly limited to a read-only capability,” he stated. He also highlighted that DOGE workers lack access to any data tied to court-ordered temporary restraining orders, current or future, and any legal transgressions will be reported to the Department of Justice for potential action.

In his remarks, Dudek also addressed concerns regarding reports of centenarians receiving Social Security benefits, which were mentioned by Musk during a discussion with President Trump in the Oval Office recently.

To summarize the key points from Dudek’s message on the SSA website:

The goal of effective governance is to enhance operations. DOGE is an indispensable element of President Trump’s focus on detecting fraud, waste, and inefficiency while improving government services for the populace. It is crucial to outline the role of DOGE personnel embedded within Social Security.

Prioritizing accurate and timely payments to beneficiaries remains our commitment, along with assuring essential services for those in need.

The personnel assigned from DOGE cannot modify agency systems, initiate benefit payments, or change any associated information. Their access is solely for reading.

Additionally, these personnel do not have access to data related to any court-ordered temporary restraining order, whether current or forthcoming.

Strict adherence to legal guidelines is mandatory for DOGE staff, and any violations will result in referral to the Department of Justice for potential prosecution.

Dudek also recognized recent discussions concerning the number of individuals over 100 years of age who may appear to be receiving benefits. He clarified that the data reflect individuals registered with Social Security numbers who have no recorded date of death and that these individuals are not necessarily beneficiaries.

Engagement from the public is available to be viewed on the SSA.gov website, many have expressed their views on the DOGE audit. Responses vary from gratitude for the oversight to concerns about the potential mishandling of personal information.
