Within hours of Inauguration, Trump’s administration, “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) faces lawsuits

Within hours of President Trump being sworn in at his  inauguration, his newly established “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) has been faced multiple lawsuits. As soon as Trump took the oath of office, three cases were filed in D.C. federal court, claiming that DOGE violates the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA).

Progressive groups, including Public Citizen, the American Public Health Association, and the public interest law firm National Security Counselors spearheaded the lawsuits. They aim to prevent co-heads Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy from collaborating with the new administration.

While Musk and Ramaswamy plan to implement significant cuts to government spending and reorganize federal agencies, Ramaswamy also has his sights set on running for governor of Ohio.

These lawsuits mark some of the earliest legal challenges against Trump’s administration. Trump is expected to sign numerous executive orders later, which could trigger further legal actions.

According to the plaintiffs, DOGE falls under FACA’s jurisdiction, requiring federal advisory committees to adhere to transparency standards such as having a charter, balanced membership, and a designated official to oversee meetings.

The National Security Counselors’ lawsuit contends that DOGE’s membership is heavily skewed, representing predominantly “small-government crusaders” from the tech sector or Republican circles, rendering it imbalanced and unsuitable for its intended role.

Other plaintiffs include the American Federation of Government Employees, the American Federation of Teachers, the progressive veterans group VoteVets Action Fund, and the watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

Additionally, the Center for Biological Diversity has initiated a separate lawsuit, requesting a federal judge to grant access to public records detailing interactions between DOGE members and the White House since the transition.
