Stay Informed on Sunday, February 9th: Your Daily Dose of News Highlights.

Here’s an overview of today’s recent world and political events:

• In an exclusive interview airing on FOX News prior to the Super Bowl LIX coin toss, former President Trump expressed confidence that Elon Musk would uncover “hundreds of billions” in inefficiencies with the latest DOGE initiatives. The discussion will also delve into the changes implemented during Trump’s first month and the initial 100 days of his presidency.

• Expressing concerns over “massive human rights violations,” Trump announced that the U.S. would pause financial aid to South Africa. He criticized the country’s land confiscation policies. Trump stated that “terrible” things are happening in parts of Southern Africa. Following this decision, plans are in place to help resettle South African farmers and their families as refugees due to the ongoing issues.

• Recovery teams in Alaska have located the remains of all ten victims from a recent plane crash. The aircraft was found on sea ice approximately 30 miles southeast of Nome after vanishing while traveling from Unalakleet. The pilot, Chad Antill, 34, has been identified following the wreck’s discovery by U.S. Coast Guard personnel.

• Footage emerging from social media showed Gazans nearing the border fence close to Nahal Oz on Sunday, despite a 700-meter buffer zone stipulated by the ceasefire agreement after the IDF’s (Isreal Defence Forces) retreat from the Netzarim corridor. In response, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) opened fire to disperse the group, resulting in reports of three fatalities from the incident.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz addressed the situation, emphasizing that the nation’s security policy towards Gaza is straightforward: any individual entering the buffer zone does so at their own peril. Katz reiterated a stance of zero tolerance for any threats posed to IDF personnel or the border area.

As discussions about Gaza’s governance post-war arise, a survey indicated that a majority of Jewish respondents favor a multinational force over Israeli control. Meanwhile, support for Hamas among Arab Israelis surged from 8% in September 2024 to 29% in January 2025, according to recent findings from a study released by the Jerusalem Post.

• A significant earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the Caribbean, approximately 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands on Saturday evening. The National Weather Service indicated that any tsunami alerts would keep expected water levels below one foot, with Puerto Rico anticipated to feel effects within an hour.

In the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, Donald Trump stated that he has spoken with Vladimir Putin about seeking an end to the war, expressing a desire for the loss of life to stop. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, however, neither confirmed nor denied this dialogue on Sunday.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week to discuss strategies against Russian aggression. This unfolds alongside North Korea’s recent support for Russia, with Kim Jong Un asserting that his country will back the Russian military in defending its sovereignty.

In the latest military updates, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that its air defense units intercepted and destroyed 35 Ukrainian drones over the weekend, mainly in the Kursk region adjacent to Ukraine. Ukraine’s air force announced the downing of 67 out of 139 launched Russian drones on Saturday, while 71 others vanished from radar without hitting their targets.

• Elon Musk shared a series of updates that his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) intends to implement at the U.S. Treasury Department this weekend.

He emphasized that these necessary adjustments will be carried out by dedicated career government employees rather than members of DOGE.

According to Musk, Treasury officials are trying to simplify the auditing of government finances and enhance accountability regarding fund allocation. Additionally, the revised approach will mandate treasury staff to update the congressional “do not pay” list more regularly, targeting fraudsters and illicit operations.

• Rumors of Elon Musk is reportedly investing $40 million in five Super Bowl ads that will highlight government waste identified by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) through the findings of USAID.

There is excitement among users on X (formerly Twitter), but the ads are still considered rumors since no one has confirmed anything regarding the Superbowl ads.
